Cat Bow Tie

8 Apr

Bow ties date back to the 17th century. During the 30 Years War, Croatian mercenaries went to France to show their support to King Louis. In order to keep their shirts closed they wrapped a loosely fitted tie around their necks. The early form of today’s bow tie served two purposes: (1) To keep the top of their uniforms closed, and (2) to protect the soldiers’ necks from the cold wind and rain. Some historians still argue that besides having a solely practical purpose, it was also inspired by fashion.

I wear it because I’m British and I like James Bond. I got mine from The Sophisticated Cat.

Best Friends hosts aCATemy Awards

4 Mar

I came across the Best Friends Animal Society website while Mama was obsessing over adopting a second kitty. I don’t think I can let that happen since all the attention in this house belongs to me.

Best Friends is based in Utah, USA and while that’s a long walk from Melbourne, I appreciate their good work. One of their most famous rescues was in Pahrump, Nevada where 400 cats were found to be living in neglect at what was meant to be an animal shelter. The 2 ½-acre property was in terrible shape when Best Friends arrived, and most of the cats were starving and in dire need of medical care. Best Friends took care of the cats till they were back on all four feet again, before finding forever homes. Good ending to a story that could otherwise have ended very badly.

So, the good humans at Best Friends decided to host a real aCATemy Awards ceremony last week. Somehow my nominations didn’t make the cut. Still, the kitties that walked the red carpet at the uber glamorous adoption events in Los Angeles and New Jersey were much more worthy.

At each event, guests entered on the red carpet decorated with the names of the feline celebs, including Denzel Pawshington, Will Feral, Cindy Clawford, and Cat Winslet. Inside 200 cats were awaiting the purrparazzi and a new forever home.

Each adoption was a grand event, with family members receiving a special aCATemy Award statue and having their photos taken with the newest star of the family.

Thanks to moderncat for the info.

How to walk a cat

22 Feb

I’ve just returned from my invigorating sunset stroll. Much like humans enjoy, except Mama insists on dressing me in a ridiculous harness contraption. By restricting my adventure zone she claims this will prevent the following unfortunate fates should I abscond:

a) being stolen by another British Shorthair enthusiast who in addition to lacking morals, serves poor quality food;

b) facing a violent altercation with another feline, resulting in torn ears and decimated pride; and

c) prematurely waking up in the cathouse in the sky after playing tag with a 2 tonne vehicle on big wheels.

I couldn’t find a more committed pessimist if I tried. Still, I am choosy when it comes to the evening meal, or the morning one for that matter, so I acquiesce.

If you too insist on harnessing your feline while tip toeing through the catnip, may I suggest the following.

For the first-time feline stroller, leave the door to inside open in case we need to make a hasty exit from the frightening thing that is nature.

To the outdoorsy Mama (or Papa) grass may appear to be a harmless ground cover. But beware! Strange creatures lurk beneath so if your feline employs the same hesitation walking across the lawn as one might a minefield, be patient.

Remember that your feline companion is not a canine. Instead of panting stupidly at your heels, looking up to you for approval and the next move, we like to take our time. Smell the roses if you wish. Don’t yank on that harness, just let us be!

Take it slow. We can spend months exploring the one backyard. Even then that might be enough.

Feline fashion often ranges between sickly sweet and just downright insulting. But today Mama donned an outfit of which I approve.

It’s from cafepress and while Mama says the quality isn’t great, the sentiment certainly is. I salute you comrad.
